Equipment and Infrastructures
From the first decades of formation of Lubango it is important to highlight the two areas in which colonists settled: the shack area, the first settlement, some kilometres to the east of the definitive location, presently classified as an historical site, where the first cemetery and a chapel stand, with an allusive monument in the shape of a truncated pyramid-shaped pillar), the two first having been built between 1884 and 1885 (classified by dispatch no. 62, 11th November 1995); and the initial core of the city, now recognized as the Historical Centre, from which the urban fabric developed. In addition to its value as a whole, the Historical Centre brought together some of the finest examples from the first decades of colonization including, notably, the former residence of the inspector of the colony (1887) recognized as a Monument of Public Interest, the former Government Palace (built in 1887 and classified as a Heritage Site (dispatch no. 46, the 8th July 1992) and the former Town Hall (construction between 1900-1915), classified as a Historical Monument. In the area surrounding the centre, the Hamilton Lopes Building (erected in 1895 and classified in dispatch no. 12, the 18th April 1999), must be highlighted. It features “Brazilian” style which has now been significantly changed. The former Railway Station (construction began in 1905, inaugurated in 1923 designed by Humberto Trindade and classified in dispatch no. 11, 18th May April 1994), is also worth mentioning. Both were recognized as Historical – Cultural Heritage. It should also be mentioned the building of the Custom House (1900-1905), located near the former station.
