Precol Residential Blocks Unidade de Vizinhança n.º 1 (Prenda Quarter)
Luanda [São Paulo de Luanda], Luanda, Angola
Designed between 1963 and 1965 by Fernão Lopes Simões de Carvalho with the collaboration of José Pinto da Cunha and Fernando Alfredo Pereira this ensemble forms the built section of the Unidade de Vizinhança no. 1 (neighbourhood unit no. 1) of the Prenda Quarter, a partial plan elaborated between 1961 and 1962 by the first mentioned architect and by the city’s Urbanization Office, according to the tenets of the Athens Charter. The architecture reveals the direct influence of the Dwelling Units of Le Corbusier: the different types of residential blocks suspended on pilotis are marked by the distinct connection in plan, outline and elevation of the typological variants that resulted from the expansion of the same basic module, into simple houses or duplexes scaled, according to the modular plan. The external areas are now densely occupied by the musseque and the buildings are in an advanced state of decay.
