Mutu ya Kevela High School (former Salvador Correia High School)
Luanda [São Paulo de Luanda], Luanda, Angola
Equipment and Infrastructures
It is located at no. 79, Avenue Lenin, formerly Avenue Brito Godins. It was the first high school to be built in Angola, in 1945, and is the finest exemplar of Portuguese neo-traditional architecture developed in Luanda. With a monumental appearance and in revivalist style (evoking the huge volumes of Portuguese conventual buildings or manors, and punctuated with a tower capped by a finial), this building was the most exatlted expression of the power of the Estado Novo at the time and marked the city’s expansion. After abandoning a first Art Deco project in 1934 designed by Sá Meneses it was redesigned and built by the JCES – Junta das Construções para o Ensino Secundário (Construction Unit for Technical and High Education) designed by architect José António Costa in 1936-1945 (inaugurated in 1942) It was acknowledged as a National Monument by dispatch no. 47, of the 8th July 1992.
