Equipment and Infrastructures

The Vasco da Gama market is located on one of the city’s main avenues. It was built between 1935, when the respective properties were expropriated, and its inauguration in 1938. The U-shaped building defines the streets around the southern part of the block where the market is situated. In 1959-61 it was enlarged on the Avenida Freitas Ribeiro side, first by construction of a one- storey building, which was later increased to two storeys. It is hard to distinguish this volume from the original construction. The original building formed an open block in its interior, though nowadays all this space has been occupied by constructions and the market takes up the entire block. The building has two floors and is simply built. Great care was taken with the main entrance. It is marked by a clock tower and is one of the rare examples of the use of a language of Indo-Saracen influence in Goan territory.
