It was opened to the public on the 3rd October 1964 after being inaugurated by the president of the Portuguese Republic, admiral Américo Thomaz. The construction contract was awarded to engineer Jaime Guedes. It starts at Alto de Chicumbane, ten kilometres south of the banks of the river, extending over low ground that floods every year, passing over a bridge with 73 metres on ten viaducts (totalling 494 metres length) and, finally, the bridge itself over the Limpopo River, for a total of 210 metres, with a central span of 120 metres and four suspension pillars. It is part of the Maputo-Beira road over100 km south of the later city. It is a work designed by engineer Edgar Cardoso.
