Modernist Buildings in Município Square
Beira, Sofala, Mozambique
Equipment and Infrastructures
Overlooking the square are the following facilities: a building of modernist design, with the characteristic geometric/cylindrical shapes, possibly from the 1930s-1940s which was occupied in the 1960s by the “Riviera” and “Lar Moderno” stores; the Beira Town Hall or municipal council was redesigned and rebuilt by architect José Luís Porto (1883-1965), dating from 1944; and the old Post Office, a work in Art Deco style, with a corner enhanced by a pilastered structure with a characteristic pyramid top. This was decommissioned in 2009 and after seeking other uses it was demolished.
