Church of the Holy Family
Luanda [São Paulo de Luanda], Luanda, Angola
The church is located in the municipality of Ingombota. At the initiative of the town hall, a public competition for the construction of the church was opened on February 1964. The architects António de Sousa Mendes and Sabino Luis Martins were the winners whose proposal combined traditional and modernist elements. It was the first church in Angola to adopt a more geometrical and modern architecture (more similar to industrial and modulated forms). With its volumetry of a structural nature, it introduced in the city an innovative vision of a sacred Modernism (interior design by architect Ramos Chaves).
