Private School Our Lady of Peace

Kuíto/Cuíto [Silva Porto/Belmonte], Bié, Angola

Equipment and Infrastructures

A building aimed at elementary and high education for girls, it occupies a whole city block. When it was built in the 1960s it was a contemporary and airy two-storey building added to the former private school. It included vast dormitories and bathrooms and had an interior pool for students. In the old section, with its single floor, interior verandas opened onto a courtyard with garden around which the classrooms, refectories and administrative services were organized. It also has a chapel, the usual kitchens and laundry rooms, a house for the nuns and a park of cedars with playing fields. It continues to be used as a teaching institution administered by the State from 1975 and now once again in the hands of the Catholic Church. The main façade features an original and distinctive system of curved and sculptural pillars forming a portico. It was recently restored.
