Small Fort of Quissala, Headquarters and Training Centres

Military Architecture

The former small Fort of Quissala has essentially disappeared. It was rebuilt in the 1950s but almost nothing remains of it today. What is worthy of note is the extended area of headquarters and training centres (from the 1940s, with later development) including the former 21st Infantry Regiment (with a central body containing the entrance and with two two-floor turrets, on a castle design visible on its platband and on the battlemented parapet) and the former Escola de Aplicação Militar (Military Application School) (in neo-Baroque Estado Novo style on a symmetrical axis with a triangular pediment flanked by pinnacles) which became the Escola de Oficiais (Officers’School) after Independence and then the Pré-Academia Militar (Pre-Military Academy), having been severely damaged in the post-1992 war.
