Fort

Corjuem, Goa, India

Military Architecture

This fortress located on Corjuem Island near Aldona, from which it is separated by the Mapusa River, was captured in 1705 by Viceroy Caetano de Mello e Castro. He immediately repaired it and left a garrison to help withstand the constant Maratha incursions into Goan territory. The fort has a square plan measuring 125 metre per side, and four polygonal bastions. On 12 June 1741, it was recaptured from the Bhonsles of Sawantwadi by a combined force of infantry, grenadiers and sepoys commanded by the General of Bardez, Manoel Soares Velho. It was rebuilt in the early 19th century for eventual use by students of the Military School. Inside it has a well and a small chapel. But the fort was left unmanned in 1811 and then abandoned in 1834, as it had lost strategic importance.
