Church of Our Lady of Good Remedy
Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil
Religious Architecture
As more people arrived on the island of Fernando de Noronha, the residents felt the need to erect a church. Construction began in 1737, when a defence system was also being built. It is an extremely simple edifice, whose frontispiece composition is associated to the baroque style. The ornamental architectural features were done in stone. The interior decoration is the only kind possible, given the natural difficulty of transporting everything to the archipelago. The altarpieces represent a transitional style between rococo and neo-classicism, with rather mediocre motifs and implementation. They probably date from the 19th century or even later. The church was restored in 1988 by iphan, an institution of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture.
