Prédio do Sol (Sun Building), Block of Multi-family Housing
Lobito [Lubito, Olupitu], Benguela, Angola
Located in the region of the sandspit opposite Square Luís de Camões, these assembly of buildings of modern design was the first work conceived by Castro Rodrigues for Lobito after an invitation by the local town hall president. Designed in Lisbon, it was built after he settled in the city. It consists of a collective residential building from 1952-1953 which became known as “Prédio do Sol” (Sun Building), or “Bloco do Sol” (Sun Block) due to the impressive polychrome ceramic panel by Ribeiro de Pavia placed on the gable end. The façades, with box verandas, follow the rules of the modern architecture of the time and the roof had a mansard treatment punctuated by windows.
