São Filipe, Fogo Island, Cape Verde
The architectural characteristics of the so-called sobrados (manor houses) built in the city’s historic centre are worthy of note. Most of these centenary buildings have two floors. According to a description by Valentim Fernandes they were originally built in 1506 using uncoated stone. They have since been coated and have painted bases and fascia. The manner of their adjustment to the slopes, along with their modulation, façade composition, bay size and proportions, and construction details undeniably root these buildings in Portuguese colonial architecture.
